5 Ways To Keep Your Home Safe This Summer

How to make sure your house is secure while you’re on vacation

Summer is upon us, and that means it’s vacation time for families all across the country. With school letting out and the beautiful weather, it’s the perfect time for a week or two away from home. Unfortunately, as the weather heats up, crime rates tend to spike as well. According to the FBI, crime rates go up between 6 and 16 percent during the months of June, July, and August. You want to go on vacation, but you don’t want to leave your home a target for burglars while you are away enjoying the sun. Here are some ways you can keep your home safe, and your mind at ease while on vacation.
1.If you still receive a daily newspaper, one of the oldest tricks in the book for thieves is looking for a home with a pile of old newspapers in front. Be sure to stop your newspaper service while you are away on vacation. The same goes for mail. The post office will stop your mail for free; all you have to do is ask.
2.Keep your house looking lived-in. You may have stopped your newspaper and mail, but there are many more ways to keep up the illusion that your house is occupied. Make sure your house isn’t dark all the time. Invest in timers for your lights that will turn them on for a few hours each evening. If you cut your own grass, pay someone in the neighborhood to cut it while you are away. A freshly cut lawn is a great way to send the message that everything is normal at your house.
3.Lock it up. This might seem like a pretty obvious tip, but it can be easy to forget to lock up a rarely used window or throw the deadbolt when you leave. Double check everything before you leave and you will be glad you did when you get back.
4.Keep some eyes on your house. If you have family or friends in the area, or even trusted neighbors, let them know you will be gone and ask them to check up on the house for you while you are away. Conversely, don’t shout it out on social media that you are going on an extended vacation before you leave or while you are there. It’s not always just your friends who see what you put on the Internet.
5.Having your family check on the house while you are gone is nice, but how would you like to be able to see exactly what’s going on at your home while you’re gone? With new, high-tech Wi-Fi cameras, you can monitor the inside and outside of your home with your smartphone while you relax on the beach. The best peace of mind is knowing that everything at home is exactly the way you left it, and setting up a few of these cameras will give you just that.
6.Taking a vacation in the summer is a time that you want to spend with as few worries as possible. No one wants to be wondering if their belongings are safe while they’re lying on the beach. With home security cameras , you can relax knowing that your home is safe and secure. Feel free to contact us today for more information.
